Fall Classes

Ovation Academy classes are designed to help students build new musical theater skills, develop their confidence as performers, make friends, and of course, HAVE FUN! No experience is necessary except where indicated.

All classes culminate in a 15-minute showcase for friends and family during the last day of class.

AGES 5-8

Kids of Broadway

LET’S SING BROADWAY

JANUARY 12 – MARCH 23 | MONDAY 4:00 – 5:00PM

This class is designed for young singers who want to build confidence and have fun singing! Students will learn foundational skills such as proper vocal warm-ups, stage presence, and lyric memorizing. This is a great prep class for Broadway Voice or a Broadway Academy Show. By the end of the class, they’ll feel confident singing in front of an audience and enjoying music with friends!

BROADWAY KIDS

JANUARY 13 – MARCH 24 | TUESDAYS 3:30 – 4:30PM

Let your inner-star shine through in this introductory exploration of musical theater! This beginner class will cover all aspects of musical theater from choreography, scene work, and musical storytelling through popular, age-appropriate Broadway selections. Students will gain a deeper appreciation for musical theater, as well as expand their repertoire. This class is perfect for your budding star who wants to discover what it takes to be on Broadway!

ACTING I: Intro to Acting

JANUARY 13 – MARCH 24 | TUESDAYS 4:00 – 5:00PM

This exciting entry level acting class focuses on giving young performers the CONFIDENCE to grip an audience and the SKILLS to captivate. Students will become more spontaneous, creative, playful and imaginative, all while developing valuable theater and interpersonal skills. Learn theater terminology, explore short scenes and monologues, and find out why it is called a “play”!

Chassé and pirouette your way to Broadway! This class builds essential technique in the core styles that shape musical theater choreography. Students explore classic and contemporary Broadway combinations, learning to tell stories through movement and confidently pick up level-appropriate choreography.

Young performers will learn songs from the Sound of Music, with physical, vocal, and storytelling exercises sprinkled in. The final showcase will be a mini version of the show. This explorative class is perfect for young performers who have completed Acting I and are ready to build on their skills at a comfortable pace. Students continue learning the foundations of acting while strengthening improv, character work, and ensemble collaboration. Through fun, imaginative exercises, they adventure into imaginary worlds, bring stories to life, and gain the confidence and technique needed to prepare for Acting II.

ACTING II: The Actor’s Toolbox

JANUARY 13 – MARCH 24 | TUESDAYS 6:00 – 7:00PM

Unleash your creativity and charisma in this high-energy intermediate level ensemble-based class. This  class is designed as a sequel to Acting 1.5, where students will explore a range of material, expanding their theatre repertoire and building their “Actor’s Toolbox”. With the basics established, young performers will utilize theater games and exercises to build stage presence, delve deeper into character development, improv, and storytelling in a supportive, encouraging environment.

BROADWAY VOICE I

JANUARY 15 – MARCH 26 | THURSDAYS 5:30 – 6:30PM

Sing, harmonize, and bring your favorite songs to life! In this technique-focused class, young performers build confidence and develop the skills needed to tackle any style of music. Through a variety of age-appropriate Broadway songs, students learn proper breathing and vocal techniques, explore basic music theory, practice Solfege, are introduced to sight-reading, and work on two-part harmonies—all in a fun, supportive environment.

BROADWAY DANCE II

Gotta Dance! In this class students will continue their Broadway Dance I training, exploring various dance forms used in musical theatre. They’ll build confidence onstage and feel better prepared for dance auditions and performances as they expand their dance vocabulary and execute choreography at a more advanced level.

TAP

JANUARY 21 – APRIL 8 | WEDNESDAY 7:00 – 8:00PM

“Get out your tap shoes Francis!” Step up your rhythm and style! This intermediate tap class builds on foundational skills, introducing more complex steps, combinations, and rhythms. Students focus on timing, musicality, and performance quality while developing confidence and precision. Through fun exercises and choreography, performers expand their tap vocabulary and prepare for advanced classes and performance opportunities. Must have completed Tap I or have equivalent experience.

CHOREOGRAPHY LAB

JANUARY 16 – MARCH 27 | FRIDAY 5:00 – 6:00 PM

Ever wondered how choreographers create such amazing pieces? Join Broadway performer Jacob for this Choreography Lab and learn just that! Each week students will study and be inspired by notable choreographers and dances, techniques for creating storytelling movements, and create pieces of their own to be presented at the final showcase.

ON CAMERA ACTING

FEBRUARY 14 – MARCH 14 | SATURDAY 1:00 – 3:00PM

Lights, camera, action! This 8-week class is split into two focused sessions: 4 weeks on commercial acting and 4 weeks on TV/film techniques. Students learn to act naturally on camera, hit marks, adjust performance for different shot sizes, and deliver authentic emotions. Through working on actual TV/film scenes and commercial copy, students will build confidence, screen presence, and a strong understanding of on-camera storytelling—all in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Dance

BALLET FOR BROADWAY

JANUARY 11 – MARCH 22 | SUNDAY 10:00 – 11:00AM

Designed for the musical theater performer, this class will focus on essential ballet technique, which is the foundation of musical theatre dance, and help students craft a solid dance foundation. Infuse your musical theatre training with this vital technique and vocabulary, that will strengthen and condition you to excel as a dancer and performer.

TLC: Turns, Leaps, Conditioning 

JANUARY 11 – MARCH 22 | SUNDAY 11:00AM – 12:00PM

Train like an athlete! This specialty class will focus specifically on intermediate to advanced level technical skills and teach students how to train and condition safely for optimal performance. Highly recommended for Company members and those who are interested in higher level dance education and performance.

Musical Theater for Grownups

JANUARY 12 – APRIL 6 | MONDAY 7:30 – 9:30PM

Move over kids, it’s time for the grownups to take the stage! Choose numbers from your favorite Broadway musicals to work on with your fellow musical theater-lovers, incorporating choreography, character development, and vocal harmonies. Culminates in a cabaret-style showcase for friends and family. All levels welcome.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Where do classes take place?

A: Ovation now has two locations: the Madison Street Theater at 1010 Madison St in Oak Park; and Ovation Studio at 7419 Madison Street, Forest Park. The locations are 1/2 mile away from one another on Madison Street. The location of each class is indicated in the registration window.

Q: Who is teaching my child’s class?

A: Visit our Staff Page for photos and bios of our amazing staff!

Q: What happens if I miss a class?

A: We do not offer make-up classes, but your child can book a private lesson with an instructor to make up missed content, or simply catch up upon their return.

Q: How does the payment plan option work?

A: If you indicate “Yes” when asked if you’d like to opt in to our payment plan, you will be charged 25% of the tuition up front, and the remaining balance in 3 equal portions until it is paid off. Charges are usually processed on the 1st and 15th of each month.

Q: If I’m unsure what level my child is ready for, how do I decide?

A: Reach out to our staff and we will help you determine the best class for your child.

Q: When is the final showcase?

A: Final showcases take place on the last day of class, during the last 15 minutes of the class session. Families are welcome to join.
